All the deck and pile wharfs implement with an open view for this reason it is known as open wharf (open-type). This example of wharf is very conventional types of wharf at the ports of the Persian Gulf.
In this system the vertical forces are sustained as reliance, side friction and or total of them by piles that are piled within the floor. The lateral forces are born in different ways. The concrete deck of structure mainly distributes the lateral loads in elements.
Components of deck and pile wharf
Usually the prefabricated steel and concrete piles with circular or square sections are used in this types of wharf. In this case the piles are piled to an appropriate depth in order to provide the wharf’s stability and strength. Of course, the wooden piles can also be seen in small ports (local fishing ports) and old ports that if they have made of the appropriate and treated wood, they are still healthy and operational.

One the advantages of the deck and pile wharfs is their good performance in earthquake prone areas. And if they are not made of the oblique piles to provide lateral loading or if the oblique piles are run with knuckle joint, they can pass several earthquakes.
Using oblique piles makes that the hardness of these wharfs increases during an earthquake, at the joint of oblique pile and the deck demolishes in that area that also after that reducing resistance in that area makes the demolition expanded and makes the wharf destroyed in the next earthquake loads. Therefore it is strongly recommended that the oblique piles are not used in making these wharfs and if used, it uses as knuckle joint.
The great deck and pile wharf
The deck and pile wharfs usually has higher construction costs than other wharfs and impose many pile driving operations however in the areas where the floor’s soil is loose and has not enough loading, we have to use these types of wharf. Using of steel piles in this types of wharf requires preparations such as continuous cathodic protection and a suitable covering in the water splashing area, otherwise, the wharf capacity will reduce and destroy by rusting and reducing piles’ thickness.

The concrete piles have more resistance in terms of corrosion and if they are provided as prefabricated and with observing the technical points in preventing the penetration of Chloride ion (the minimum amount of cement is 350 to 400 kg, the water to cement ratio, the proper treating, using of pozzolan in mixing model, protecting against breaking when bearing and transmitting and …) can be used for many years without need to be cared.
Pile driving in the sea
The hollow concrete piles that also are known as centrifuge piles, they are used in constructing the deck and pile wharfs that they have less dead load, more resistance to sea water corrosion, easier knocking and they also connect to each other well. Of course, if they are used in hard lands or they hit the hard layer, their knocking with s strong hammer will make a breaking and therefore this issue should be attended in knocking stages.
